Now here’s a shocker ─ Roller shutters are… wait for it… not just doors!

You heard me right. While doors are the most popular form roller shutters come in, roller shutters can be used for more than just doors. They come in several other forms ranging from doors to window blinds and other creative uses that some times have nothing to do with doors.

So what exactly are roller shutters?

Basically, roller shutters are sectional overhead shutters usually, but not always, made of steel, sometimes reinforced with aluminium, that consist of several horizontal bars or slats linked together. Though exterior doors are the most common application of this technology, they can also be used for several other functions.

Some of these other roller shutter functions include being used as:

Window blinds (on the interior part of the windows)
Window protection (on the exterior part of the windows)
Integrated roller shutter windows (a mix between windows and roller shutters)
Kitchen doors and doors for other interior spaces
     Other integrated uses

The special functions of roller shutters
So here’s what you most likely already know ─ roller shutters provide additional security advantages. They are also easy to operate when automated and provide resistance against UV rays from the sun.

There are, however, other hidden functions of this technology that you probably did not know about. They include:

     Easy escapability during emergencies

Owing to their large size, roller shutter doors make it easier for a large number of people to be evacuated during emergencies, increasing their chances of escape even when the window of opportunity is little.

Insulation of the interior building it is meant to protect.

The word "insulation" here doesn't simply mean keeping the excessive heat or cold out of the building. While roller shutters do achieve this, they also insulate your building from other harsh weather conditions like hail and bad weather. With a roller shutter doors and “window shields”, the interior of your building becomes completely insulated from the elements.

     Protection against peeping toms.

Nobody likes a creepy stalker. You know those weird people always shadowing you, peeping through glass doors and happening around your windows every time you are on one important call or the other? Yes, those ones! Simply installing roller shutter blinds can keep them out of your face for good!

So there you have it. Roller shutters are more than just a certain type of door. They can be used for a lot more than that. From window blinds to built-on installments, roller shutters are a good addition to any home.
